Headies Awards 2016: HIT OR MISS?

The Headies 2016 awards may have come and gone but people haven't stopped talking about it and unfortunately they may not for a very long time. This year's awards,in all its 11 years, witnessed the lowest turnout of celebrities and guests.

Though the award wasn't was everyone anticipated,it had a few memorable highlights some of which included the performances of pioneer artists in the Nigerian music industry like Daddy Showkey, Eddy Remedy, Idris Abdulkareem,Tony Tetuila, Ras Kimono, Jazzman Oloffin and even Fuji star Adewale Ayuba and a host of others.

The Strange Visit - Episode 11 (Final Episode)

We took a bus down to Nneka's village. When we got to her compound I saw a woman, surrounded by other women. They were consoling her,"It's alright. Don't worry. She would be found." I needed no soothsayer to tell me that the woman was Nneka's mother. I felt sorry for her plight. I was filled with guilt. "But I didn't kill her,I am innocent. I just wished her daughter would come back to her".

When she caught sight of us,she ran towards us and held the poor girl with me,Nneka's room mate. "Where is my daughter!" She yelled. It took people's effort to let her go off the helpless girl. I should be held, not her. I heard a voice calling me,I turned and it was Nneka. I shifted backwards in fear. I was about to run but where to?

MMM,CHRISTMAS: Lamentations as low sales greet Abuja markets

Some Abuja residents have associated the low preparation for Christmas to the alleged crash of MMM.
December 25 every year is set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The build-up to this day is characterised by exchange of gifts and food items. This makes Yuletide period, the most anticipated time of the year for traders and gift vendors.

This case is, however, different this year as traders and vendors lament poor sales in the various markets visited by Pulse correspondent in Abuja.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I couldn't believe it was Nneka sitting on my bed. Out of fear,I opened my mouth to scream but couldn't produce any sound!

What could have happened to my voice? I made to open the door which I was leaning on,in order to run away but it refused to open. I fell to the ground with a mighty thud. My heart was beating very fast. Nneka laughed and laughed and laughed again. I stood up,leaning my back tightly against the door. I wished I could disappear through it at that point in time.

"What? What's the reason for that? Why will the police want to search my room?" I asked desperately. "They just want to search all the rooms in the lodge. According to them,it's the procedure. You are not the only person,so you have to come as fast as you can or else they will break in to your room when it gets to your turn" he explained patiently. "Fine,I'll be there" I murmured half-heartedly,breathing deeply.

It really took me about two hours to make up my mind on returning to the lodge, because I was so scared that the police might find something in my room. A lipstick, lock of hair or anything incriminating,I feared. Though I was so sure that I wiped my room clean before travelling, but they were experts and I was scared something could be found somehow.

However,I finally returned to my lodge very late in the afternoon with the hope that my room has been broken into. But on the contrary it was as I left it(still locked). I quickly met the hostel president with questions in my heart and immediately he saw me he smiled, offering his hand for a handshake. "Its very fine you showed up today. All the rooms that are yet to be searched will be searched tomorrow. Some students travelled like you did which is very bad and as a result the cops decided to search the rooms of available students while the locked ones will be searched tomorrow whether the owners return or not" he explained, settling my curiosity.

I returned to my room a bit relieved and satisfied, quickly cleaned up everything in it one more time, washing the bedsheet Nneka laid on over and over. In fact,I made sure my room was very much in order before resting that day. My room was so clean that the three policemen who searched it early the next morning commented on it. "Seems like you are the cleanest student in this lodge. Your room is so clean" one of them said to me as he tossed around my properties, without suspecting anything, leaving me a bit relaxed.

"What next?" I asked myself as I watched them leave. I bolted the door as they left and took a sigh of relief with my eyes closed, resting my back against the door. Immediately, I heard a voice right there in my room calling my name slowly:
"JUUUDE, JUUDE..."

I opened my eyes and behold,it was Nneka sitting on my bed..

I nervously opened my door and came face to face with the hostel president, a policeman in uniform and the S.U.G president. I stared at them with panic. “Please can we come in? The officer has some important questions to ask you”, the S.U.G president explained while my heart froze. My guilty conscience was at its worst that moment. I fearfully allowed them into the room, my heart pounding furiously as the policeman took a sharp look around my room before settling down on the only plastic chair I had, while the two students with him stood and stared at me. I knew they all noticed my nervous behaviour.

THE INNOCENT BOTTLE

A man woke up in the morning deeply repentant after a bitter fight with his wife the previous night. He noticed with dismay the crate of beer bottles that had caused the fight.

He took it outside and started smashing the empty bottles one by one onto the wall.

He smashed the first bottle swearing,
"you are the reason I fight with my wife".

He smashed the second bottle,
"you are the reason I don't love my children".

He smashed the third bottle,
"you are the reason I don't have a decent job".

When he took the fourth bottle, he realized that the bottle was still sealed and was full.

He hesitated for only a moment and said

"you stand aside, I know you were not involved".

The sharp cry shook the entire lodge, frightening me tremendously. My heart furiously pounced, the day of reckoning finally has arrived. I waited for a few minutes in my room as i tried so hard to compose myself. Just like other students,I had to check out the cause of the cry and noise coming from downstairs.

I wished I had traveled, but truly it was very bright of me to stay in the lodge instead of traveling because I had to be around in order to follow events and plan ahead. Moreover the hostel was a large one but it never stopped students who lived in it from knowing each other's habits and as I hardly traveled, who knows,I could be suspected. Yes I was scared that I felt every step I took could lead anyone to suspect me even though I was far from being one of the hostel terrors nor cultists who could easily be suspected as the brain behind such a deadly act.

SEEING THINGS

I’m not afraid of snakes, or toads, or bugs, or worms, or mice,
The things that girls are scared of, I think are awful nice.
I’m pretty brave, I guess; And yet I hate to go to bed,
For, when I’m tucked up warm and snug and when my prayers are said,
Mother tells me “Happy dreams!” and takes away the light,
And leaves me lying all alone and seeing things at night.

Sometimes they’re in the corner, sometimes they’re by the door,
Sometimes they all just creep and crawl across the bedroom floor;
Sometimes they come when I’m asleep, sometimes when I’m awake
So softly and so silently, they make me scream and shake.
Sometimes they are as black as ink, and other times they’re white
But color makes no difference when you’re seeing things at night.

Once, Mother caught me being bad, fighting in the street,
And Father sent me up to bed without a bite to eat.
I heard some noises in the dark and up my ears did prick
Those things were gathered all around and planning something sick.
I was so very scared that time, I got an awful fright
It’s always when I’m bad that I start seeing things at night.

Lucky thing I’m not a girl, or I’d be scared to death.
Since I’m a boy, I duck my head and then I hold my breath.
When I hear something horrible, crawling up the stairs
I promise to be better and I always say my prayers.
I’m certain that’s the only way that I can make it right
When I’ve been very wicked and start things at night!

And so, when other evil kids tempt and coax me into sin,
I try to squash the devil’s voice that urges me within.
At night the things creep closer and they aren’t very nice,
They want to eat me up without even thinking twice!
Eventually these evil things will drag me out of sight
I hope I don’t keep doing wrong, and seeing things at night!

The Man in the Pink Umbrella

And then a large man holding a pink umbrella stood peering amicably at me. I hesitated at first, but then I thought it could do me no harm. I made my way slowly towards him, trying to avoid any direct eye contact as much as possible because I really wished he would at least make an effort to drag his eyes off me and mind his own business.

In the darkness, with rain droplets dripping from the end of my umbrella, it made my vision blurry adding to the already foggy night. I kept inching my way towards him, stealthily, hoping not to catch him off guard. He kept standing there, not moving an inch for the past one hour since the incident happened.

I cracked my head searching for a good river but couldn't remember any. In desperation I thought of other alternatives. "A good bush will do" I concluded as i remembered a very large bush, four hostels behind me. The bush really was at the end of the street,a yet to be developed plot. But I was very unsure of the best time to head to the place. I knew there wasn't a way I could go there without being seen by many students and my movement might draw suspicion due to the sack bag in my possession and if eventually Nneka's body was found, tongues may wag and I could be caught,I reasoned.

Amid recession, Christmas beckons

On Friday, December 9th, only 17 days to the 2016 Christmas celebration, Mrs. Dolapo Iluyomade, an assorted fabric dealer, sat still at the entrance of her shop, in the Balogun Area of Lagos State, with forlorn looks.

Hitherto, it is the time of the year that she and her colleagues in the business are usually so busy that they have their meals in between attending to a battery of customers, who are in search of apparels to adorn during the Yuletide.

From the earlier part of the year, Iluyomade suspected that the year could end on a tough note, but never anticipated that it would be this bad.

I quietly carried her to the staircase,my heart beating wildly as i carried the heavy load. I needed a whole lot of luck to avoid detection. Only a single mistake could destroy everything I had planned. Luckily I got to my destination without being seen. I calmly dumped and pushed her well underneath the staircase of the first floor.

"If things go as planned perhaps,it will take a day or two before she is discovered" I reasoned before another idea came into my head. I rushed up to my room, grabbed a bucket of water, came down and poured it all over her. I wasnt a biologist but I felt it would destroy any evidence like my prints which were on her body.

I quickly pulled off her night wear and dressed her up with the clothes she wore from her place. A black jean trouser and a pink top. It was truly the most difficult and irritating task I have ever done in my entire life. Pulling off clothes from a dead person.

The worst aspect of it was that it was trousers and not a skirt. Putting that trousers on her was like an uphill task but I had to do it. I turned her facing down and facing up at intervals to make sure the trouser entered perfectly. Putting on her bra and pink polo wasn't that difficult. "What next?" I asked myself as I looked out of my room window. The hostel (lodge) gate was still locked. There wasn't anyway I could carry her out of the lodge without waking the gate man or be seen by early morning weed smokers, (Annoying students who were fond of smoking hemp in front of some hostels).

A Strange First Story: STEPHEN KING

One of the most remarkable articles on giving I’ve ever read came from an unlikely source. Horror novelist Stephen King. No one would accuse King of being a Christian, and certainly not a syrupy idealist. But he makes a passionate and perceptive secularist/hedonist argument for giving. Though he fails the test of eternal perspective, King intuitively recognizes not only that giving is right, but that it’s smart. He doesn’t understand that the glory of God, the good of others, and the giver’s eternal rewards are all higher reasons to give. But even bereft of a biblical worldview, the author recognizes that giving packs a transcendent purpose and pleasure here and now. King has a more accurate view of giving than many Christians:

Our desperate cries for help can and will only be heard if we,the masses, are ready for the task of rebuilding our society.
